THE AFTER LIFE
Daniel Ehrenhaft
This book is a little surreal, a little dysfunctional, and a whole lot quirky. Less than 48 hours after Will Shepherd meets his half-siblings - Liz and Kyle - for the very first time, his estranged father is dead of a drug overdose. Soon, the 19 year old drunk is on his way to Florida for the "technically Jewish" funeral and an impromptu road trip, complete with the siblings he barely knows, back to New York to collect his inheritance. As the back cover of the book promises us, "what starts as tragic turns weird," and this is definitely true. The book is told in third-person but alternates viewpoints between Will, Liz, and Kyle.
This book is a mess, but I mean that in a good way. Will is a depressed 19 year old self-medicating with alcohol after the tragic death (or was it suicide?) of his uncle Pete after the 9/11 attacks. His half-siblings are confused and vulnerable (Liz) and business-savvy and seemingly unfeeling (Kyle) and together they make a strange family. Even stranger when it becomes apparent that Will has a crush on Liz. So yes, it's weird. The book is full of drug use and Will spends a good portion of the story completely drunk. None of the relationships here are what I'd call healthy, definitely not normal, and yet...
Yet there's a certain appeal in THE AFTER LIFE. Ehrenhaft's writing tends to have a certain quirky style, full of references to old rock bands and characters so sad, so messed up that you just have to feel for them. The setting here is incredibly done, from New York to Florida and everywhere in between. The plot is more than solid, the premise is amazing, and there are themes of family that sneak in every so often - especially with Kyle and Liz - with real heart. Though I didn't much like either Will or Liz, they were both very interesting and while reading I had a somewhat detached fondness for them. Kyle, on the other hand, brought an almost-realistic and completely-awesome side to what is an exceedingly weird book. Not only was he the only character that didn't seem to have a substance abuse problem, but he also brought an amount of level-headedness to an otherwise crazy trip. He's the brother that loves his sister even though he hates her, the dutiful son who makes the all the funeral arrangements because nobody else takes the initiative, and the control freak who keeps everything else in order. Quite unexpectedly, I loved him.
On the whole, this is a seriously weird book. On a personal note the drug use really bothered me but it might not bother other readers as much. The writing is great, the voice is incredibly and fantastically unique, and the story is worth it even if the ending seems a bit contrived.

October Retrospective
Sorry the October retrospective is a few days late.
Last month I reviewed:
I also did a few more top ten posts, including books that made me cry, books you have to read at least once in your life, and my favorite fictional characters. I talked about book pirates and shared with you my playlist for the WIP.

Top 10: Favorite Love Stories
ALRIGHT SO. Favorite love stories is a little different for me than favorite couples and there are a few GIANT GAPING HOLES in this list because of leaving out a few of my favorite couples whose love stories just weren't as amazing as the characters on this list. I also left out an actual historical pairing to keep everything fiction. Also I feel incredibly uncultured for having almost no classic couples on this list, but I guess I'll just have to live with that. (Oh, and this list, unlike some of the others, is actually in order. Amazing.)
1. Victor/Anthony & Sierra/Priya
Dollhouse (tv)
Best love story ever? I THINK SO. Because it's Dollhouse and therefore incredibly confusing, I have no idea how to sum up Victor & Sierra's relationship. But the basic premise of this show is that there are people who've had their personalities and minds wiped and replaced with other personalities... these "dolls" have no memories and no personality of their own, yet Victor and Sierra somehow find each other no matter what personality they're imprinted with, as well as in their simplistic doll state. SEE, I WARNED YOU IT WAS CONFUSING.
2. Jim Halpert & Pam Beesly
The Office (tv)
This is maybe the sweetest television love story ever, from the very first episode when Jim talked about Pam's favorite flavor of yogurt. They're just too adorable and nice and sweet and sometimes awkward. I love them. I also love this video.
3. Calliope & Eliot
Scrambled Eggs at Midnight (book)
This book blows me away every time I read it. Though only fifteen years old, Cal and Eliot's love story is one of the truest and most believable I've come across.
4. Landry Clark & Tyra Collette
Friday Night Lights (tv)
Friday Night Light's least popular and most hated storyline (ahem, that whole murder thing in the second season) is one of my absolute favorites and out of it came Landry and Tyra, the best couple on the show. They deserve to be on this list despite not being together anymore because (a) I love them and their story too much to leave them out, and (b) there's one season left; it's not impossible for them to end up together. These are two characters that really do bring out the best in each other and prompt the other one to be a better person.
5. Anne Shirley & Gilbert Blythe
Anne of Green Gables (book)
I'm a little ashamed to say that I don't remember which book it was that these two finally got together, but if it wasn't the first book it was at least somewhere in there. Anne is one of the best protagonists (in my opinion) and the entire history between her and Gilbert Blythe is so cute and wonderful, not to mention their story and life together after becoming a couple.
6. Elpheba & Fiyero
Wicked (musical)
As much as I tried I couldn't get through the novel, but I absolutely love the musical version of Wicked, especially Elpheba and Fiyero's love story. It's such an interesting take on The Wizard of Oz story and I love how the different characters (in this case the scarecrow and the wicked witch) connect in Wicked. Plus, I just really really love Elpheba and Fiyero, end of story.
7. George Bailey & Mary Thatch
It's A Wonderful Life (film)
Really, It's A Wonderful Life needs no explanation. Brilliant.
8. Bryce & Julianna
Flipped (book)
This is the cutest jr. high love story ever. Ever ever ever. Not only is it adorable, but there's tons of character growth and expectations vs. reality and just so much awesome I'm surprised more people haven't read it. Go. Now. Read.
9. Sara & Tobey
When It Happens (book)
Colasanti's debut novel is one of the best love stories I've read. It's one of the few "opposites attract" stories that I actually really love.
10. Kaitlin Malone & Bram Crutchfield
Scribbler of Dreams (book)
I've never been a big Romeo & Juliet fan, but there are a couple of retellings I absolutely adore and this is one of them. Kaitlin meets the kindhearted Bram when she's forced to move to a new school, only to discover he's part of the Crutchfield family that her family, the Malones, have been feuding with for ages. The "families feuding" angle is done so well here.

NANOWHATNOW?
HELLO AND WELCOME TO NOVEMBER.
Welcome, for those of you participating this year, to National Novel Writing Month. NaNoWriMo. I attempted this last year and did horrendously, so this year I'm sitting it out and working on my novel at the NORMAL PACE OF A SNAIL. But I'm an eager cheerleader and very excited about this month and YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!
I believe that you can write 50,000 words in 30 days.
Also? I want to know what you're working on! You know... if you feel like telling me. Personally, I'm reworking/rewriting/starting from scratch with the novel and idea I used during last year's NaNoWriMo. You know what this means? It means my protagonist's nickname is "Stalker" and that she's SUPACRAZY. So what are you writing? Are you doing NaNoWriMo?
Meanwhile, you deserve some WORDS from Tim Gunn. (Who, as we all know, is super awesome.)

In My Mailbox: So Much OMG!
THE BOOKS
From Publishers: THE DRAGON'S APPRENTICE, sent to me by Simon & Schuster, is most likely going to end up finding a lovely home in someone else's personal collection. However, the ARC of Courtney Summers' upcoming FALL FOR ANYTHING was sent to me by the author's publicist at St. Martin's Press and, you guys, I'm not sure how much more excited I could be about this book. I'm a huge fan of Courtney Summers and this is the first time I've gotten a chance to read one of her books before it comes out. She's absolutely amazing and OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG so much excitedness!!!! In all honesty I feel incredibly lucky to have the chance to receive an ARC of this novel and can't wait to let you guys know what I think of it. :)
Won: I'm really excited this week because both of these books are debuts and I absolutely love reading debut novels. It's always so great to find a new author whose writing you love. I won POSER from Scholarberry and THE MOCKINGBIRDS (which, like FALL FOR ANYTHING, I am so omg omg omg omg excited to read!! I think the premise is amazing and love that it's somewhat inspired by the classic TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, which is one of my favorite books) from Bri Meets Books. And, you guys, look at that cover. Stunning.
I'm incredibly excited about the books in my TBR pile... now I just need to hurry and finish the last 300 or so pages of GWTW so I can read them!

Oct. 28-31 Blog Hop (Book Wishes)
What's one bookish thing you would love to have, no matter the cost?
I'd love to have the new color Nook that BN just came out with, but more than anything I'd just love to have the money to buy all the books on my list. I realize this is a really boring answer, but isn't that what all super-intense bookworms want? MOAR BOOKS OM NOM NOM like I am the BOOK MONSTER and I EAT THEM FOR LUNCH. That said, I'm really happy with the books I have on my shelves to read, especially lately. There is so much good stuff out there to read and honestly I think that how selective ("picky") I am about what I read, along with the fact that I don't finish books I don't like, really allows me to focus on the books that are really amazing. Sure, I read some less-than-stellar ones, but more than that I read tons of books that I absolutely love, that I can relate to, that resonate with me in some way. And I love that.

Friday Five: The Website Edition!
- T.H. Mafi's brilliant, insightful, hilarious and breathtaking blog. In all honesty, Tahereh is my absolute favorite blogger and one of my favorite tweeps. She's unfailingly kind, adorably sweet, and just as zany and spazzy as I am, which is a quota few people fill. SHE IS ALL KINDS OF WONDERFUL. Plus, she runs QUERYPOLITAN, which gives her FIVE THOUSAND BONUS POINTS.
- Dinosaur Comics is the one webcomic I read every single day. It's super-funny and if I had the time I could spend hours just hitting the refresh button. T-rex is one of a kind and I do love him so.
- Hulu. Because, obviously I love television. Watch Parenthood. Watch Community. Watch 30 Rock and The Office and oh my goodness, don't judge me for watching so many shows.
- The YA & Children's page of TV Tropes. As a whole and with some minor exceptions, TV Tropes is an absolutely awesome website full of internet-y and fiction-y goodness, but the YA page is especially awesome for us YA fans. EVERYONE SHOULD GO AND ADD MORE BOOKS TO IT PLEASE BECAUSE YES.
- Hyperbole and a Half, but come on, internet, don't even try to pretend you don't read this. It's too hilarious to not.
