Armchair BEA: Introductions First

Things are going to be a bit different on the blog this week. I'm participating in Armchair BEA so in lieu of my usual Monday Writing post (and the other regularly scheduled memes/features), I'm going to be doing a few of their theme days. Today is a virtual meet-and-greet sort of thing, which means I'm answering a few (Armchair BEA-provided) questions about myself and my blog.

1. What is your current read?
I'll probably be reading something else by the time this goes up, but right now I'm in the middle of Beth Kephart's Small Damages. And the writing is so gorgeous it makes me a little sad. (This one's coming out in July.)

2. Tell us one non-book-related thing about you that everyone reading your blog may not know.
I don't know what qualifies as interesting about me, but if I didn't run a book blog I'd want to run a food blog. (I've considered doing both but it would be way too much work.)

3. Where do you see your blog in five years?
I have no idea. I love my blog, but it's definitely just a hobby and when it stops being fun or I stop being able to reasonably make time for it in my life, I'll give it up. Right now I could see myself ending it this year or keeping it going for years and years.

4. What is your favorite post you've written that you want everyone to read?
I don't know what my favorite post is. But this ("On the Topic of Bloggers at ALA") is one I wrote after attending the exhibits at ALA Midwinter last year; with ALA Annual approaching (and yeah, I'll be going again -- yay!), I think it's a very relevant post on bloggers at ALA and what is expected of us. I highly recommend reading the comment section.

5. Have your reading tastes changed since you starting blogging? How?
I wouldn't say my tastes have changed, but being so immersed in the YA market has really helped me finetune what I like. I try to be a pretty selective reader but at the same time I love to read tons of books, so really knowing what's happening in my favorite genre helps me find the books I'll like and better avoid the ones I don't want to read. Aside from this it's also introduced me to plenty of authors and books that I wouldn't have heard of otherwise -- because let's face it, BN's selection isn't that impressive.

  1. I manage to scratch my food blogging itch by participating in Weekend Cooking each week. It's only one post a week so it isn't as overwhelming as trying to maintain two separate blogs!

I look forward to seeing you around during this week!

  3. Happy Armchair BEA to you. :)

Yeah I think like you do and I'd definitely have a food blog too if I wanted to run another blog.

  4. I've become very selective in what types of YA books I read too; it saves a lot of time, right? It's nice to meet you Jordyn!

  6. I thought of doing another blog, but couldn't decide between food or politics.

    Have a great week!

  8. Learning about new books and authors that I would have otherwise skipped is one of the best parts about the whole book blogging community. Great answer!

  10. One of Kephart's books, Dangerous Neighbors, is one of my all-time favorite books. I hope she writes more historical YA.

You and I have the same attitude towards our blogs. At times, mine has gotten burdensome, so I scale way, way back (like, once a month). There's no point if it isn't interesting.

I've recently gotten into cooking, and I've been attempting to combine books and cooking, with some interesting success. Like Marg said, Beth Fish's weekend cooking is pretty neat.

If you have the time, I’d love to hear from you at my armchair BEA post.

  11. A lot of book bloggers mix it with food talk here & there. I guess we just know how to appreciate the finer things in life.

  12. One of my friends does a food blog - its so much fun to read but oye, it would probably be a lot of work! I do like to eat tho! :)

It was wonderful "meeting" you :) Armchair BEA @ the Brunette Librarian

  13. I think a food blog would be a lot more stressful to run than a book blog, but if you love it you might not think so. Since I no longer have a book store near me any selection is better

  14. Thanks so much for highlighting your Bloggers at ALA post - as a first-time blogger going to ALA later this month, I'm grateful for it! I'm so unsure how to act since I'm not a librarian and feel kind of like I'm an impostor, so I'm happy to read your experience and guidelines. (I'm a bit of a funny case because my mom does work for a library, which is how I'm going.) Maybe I'll meet you there, too! And I love your line about BN, because it's completely true; before blogging I used to be happy with the selection I had at bookstores. Now though, I'm constantly pissed off at my local stores for not having the ones I want!

Happy Armchair BEA and lovely to meet you too!

  15. So glad you are on board for Armchair BEA12. First time stopping by but other book bloggers cross cross in food like Beth Fish Reads. You can take this blog anywhere that your heart desires.

I do not spend much time in the YA world but I am never disappointed when I so. Enjoy ALA coming up.

  17. I was going to do a food blog that would also feature culinary mysteries, but it was shortly after I started Book Strings and was just too short on time to give to both blogs.

  18. I thought about doing a food blog, but it would be more a Food Catastrophes. After 3 years of living with the hubs I'm finally get a handle on cooking, but baking, I've always been obsessive about!
